On Jan. 10, 2009, former Bush administration adviser Karl Rove wrote in the Washington Post that Democrats "will run up more debt by October than Bush did in eight years. (We checked his claim here.)

David Axelrod, chief adviser to President Barack Obama, fired back on Jan. 15 in Post that Rove had it all wrong and that Bush had been the big spender.

I know we have to move forward past blaming Bush, but I think some context has to be given for the mess he inherited when discussing the success or failure of his first year.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

Some critics charge that the new policies pursued by President Obama and the 111th Congress generated the huge federal budget deficits that the nation now faces. In fact, the tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the economic downturn together explain virtually the entire deficit over the next ten years (see Figure 1).

The deficit for fiscal 2009 was $1.4 trillion and, at an estimated 10 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), was the largest deficit relative to the size of the economy since the end of World War II. Under current policies, deficits will likely exceed $1 trillion in 2010 and 2011 and remain near that figure thereafter.

The events and policies that have pushed deficits to astronomical levels in the near term, however, were largely outside the new Administration’s control. If not for the tax cuts enacted during the Presidency of George W. Bush that Congress did not pay for, the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that began during that period, and the effects of the worst economic slump since the Great Depression (including the cost of steps necessary to combat it), we would not be facing these huge deficits in the near term.

While President Obama inherited a bad fiscal legacy, that does not diminish his responsibility to propose policies to address our fiscal imbalance and put the weight of his office behind them. Although policymakers should not tighten fiscal policy in the near term while the economy remains fragile, they and the nation at large must come to grips with the nation’s deficit problem. But we should all recognize how we got where we are today.

Keep in mind that Bush didn't saddle us with the price tag for his two wars. It wasn't ON the books during his administration. Obama went and did the responsible thing...he put that on the books so we can deal with it. And has been condemned bu the frighty-righties for EVERYTHING since.

How could any conservative be so blind and ignorant to the glaringly obvious fact that Obama inherited a nearly-failed state? All because the Bush administration allowed a single terrorist attack to occur on our soil - and let's not forget the disastrous tax policies and the idiotic demonization of the rest of the civilized world. Yeah, the stinking heap of Bush dung is going to be swept under the rug and the magical days of Reagan-Think will gloriously descend on a blessed nation once more after one year of a new administration. Can anyone say racist- sore-loser corporate-tools? The hardest thing to teach a man is something his job depends on him not knowing......among conservatives this applies when his job has been sent overseas and he's unemployed and can't get into the nursing program at the local junior college. And all of this is a result of 'socialism'? Too much reality TV......

I'm sick of hearing about "blaming Bush".

Bush was terrible, and we are still feeling the affects of his disastrous policies and military aggression. We will be feeling the affects for years to come.

If, after 8 years, Obama can get America to where it was in 2000 (16 years behind) it will be a major accomplishment.

Really? You think so? When do you think that will happen? I get the feeling this "Bush Derangement Syndrome" that liberals and democrats are suffering from is a fatal disease.

That's like saying, "my 16 year old daughter just had a baby but let's not worry about who the father is"... I guess that would be Father Derangement Syndrome

Question for you.....your priorities in that situation? Discovering who the father was? Or making sure the baby was taken care of? It's actually a pretty good comparison you came up with here.

In regards to the claim = talking out of ones bunghole.

  • It's actually impossible for Obama to have run up more "debt" by October of 2009 than Bush did in 8 years...
  • You see...if Karl knew anything about fiscal definition, he would know the previous 8 years have been accumulated into "debt" and FY 2009 at the time is what's known as "budget deficit"

Officially. The first FY of the current Admin is FY 2010, which just started October 1, 2009.

And just add to that fact that 1.4 trillion or whatever is less than 5 trillion (The commonly accepted amount of debt accumulated from January 2001 - January 2009...if one wants to be that picky)

There needs to be current fiscal responsibility. But the correct comparison is a Business that *must* continue to operate who had a previous CEO who rammed it into the ground, created tons of operating costs, tons of debts, and then expecting the new guy to trim the budget to 0 loss in 1 year.

No business works like that. It takes years to right a ship.

Question for you...why would one be exclusive of the other?

It's actually a pretty good comparison you came up with here.

Thanks

BTW - the answer would be both.

In the military, we do what's called After Action Reports, it's important to know what actually happened in order to honestly assess our successes and failures...

Ok Rodney...you find out the father is a crack head junkie living in a cardboard box....What's next? Do you spend the rest of your time blaming him for all your problems or do you step up and take care of the baby and move forward?

To be honest, I think most people are tired of hearing how everything is Bush's fault. I even heard Howard Dean tonight, blame the election in Mass on Bush. The world didn't start in 2001!

Personally, I am not as interested in who to blame, as I am in hearing what we are going to do! Hiding behind closed doors to craft legislation and bribing people for votes, while allowing Wall Street and Big Business to have the final say is not the change America voted for!

I call BS on Bush Derangement Syndrome being summoned up anytime anyone mentions Bush in a realistic way. He certainly was not a perfect president. I find it particularly interesting that those who throw that term around so much seem to have a major disdain for all things Obama. Admittedly I am no Bush supporter but I don't hate the man or think he is evil incarnate ( I realize that some liberals do indeed hate him but thats their problem and they should work on it, seriously work on it) I may indeed suffer from Cheney derangement syndrome because I loathe the man and a few others from the Bush administration, Bush not so much. Obama cannot order a hamburger without his choice of mustard being questioned. That is downright silly. I gave Bush a fair shake, he was my governor and was okay at it, I didn't think he'd be a great president but I thought maybe he'd be okay. Sadly he had a lot of big egos at work behind him. I don't blame Bush for all of Obama's problems, but realistically The Bush administration handed The Obama adminnistration some big messes. People need to be realistic, look at both administrations realistically. A good example starts with what friday jones pointed out #1.2 . Bush wasn't a perfect guy, Obama's not going to be a perfect guy, even St. Reagan wasn't a perfect guy, just get real.

Also how about that Clinton derangement syndrome, his presidency still gets thrown into arguements about Bush's accomplishments and failures. Really.

Bush is gone and he has little authority now. But, this information is certainly relevent.

Make no mistake, it doesn't take any responsibility off of Obama to fix the mess. However, it most definitely should put into perspective a reasonable time frame for fixing it.

It took several years to create the mess that was left for the current Administration. To believe that decades of mismanagement would be completely undone in 12 months is to be grossly detached from reality.

Instead of bunching everything into a big ball of hate, why not approach it with some perspective ;)

Is it Obama's responsibility - YES. Should anyone expect that a decade of destruction will be cleaned up in 12 months - NO.

One thing for sure need to bring down the deficit, and that not going to happen until we get people back to work.

I don't blame Bush or Obama,

      • Bush did not ask for 911 in his first year in office, War cost money and lots of it that has to come from somewhere. Don't forget all the Natural deserters that have happen that cost money.
      • Obama inherited $1.3 trillion deficit, The war is still happening, unemployment is the highest that it ever been since the Great Depression. (Which started back when Bush was President), and we still have Natural deserters to go.

Don't forget it took Clinton almost 8 years to get us out of Debt for the first time since WWII. Which slowed the inflation Rate.
