A new book by scholar Gail Dines asserts that society's overconsumption of pornography and the ridiculous extremes of today's mainstream pornography have greatly undermined our ability to have meaningful sexual partnerships. In Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked our Sexuality, Dines traces the history of the porn industry from Playboy and Penthouse, to today's brutal fare that resembles nothing less than the videotaped sexual assault of women.

I think adult movies and virtual sex actually enhance the sexuality of a relationship or a particular individual who is not inside a relationship or a serious relationship: Sometimes it can be quite difficult for a man or a woman to get it on without seeing obscene imagery first. The graphic images spark a chain reaction in their brain, which makes them want to have sex and have lots of sex.

Besides that, with tens of thousands of new adult films churned out annually (some 25,000 were released in 2008 alone!) and classified under several different categories (Anal, Asian, Beefcake, Black, Blonde, Brazilian, Brunette, Double Penetration, Foot Fetish, Goth, Interracial, Latino, Orgy, Redhead, S&M, etc.), there are plenty to choose from. Just stay away from the lousy ones.

I'm more worried about the use of sexuality to sell almost everything these days. Even the shows meant for young kids have the girls dressed too sexy. This constant exposure to sex on one hand and the puritan views held by many on the other leaves a void. And then there are the very violent video games with very sexy girl avatars. It may be that brain reactions are getting skewed to sex= violence.

slightly different topic, but I agree sex sells. Should society have a better control over who to?

When watching porn you know what you are getting the quieter messages included in tv and movies do more damage.

Most shows treat men as if they are sex starved pigs and women as if they should tolerate this behavior...

It is insulting to all of us.
